5 out of 5 stars The Grouchy Ladybug   November 11, 2008
The kids in my pre k class really enjoyed this story. They imitate and repeat the story lines in the story after I read it to them.

5 out of 5 stars So Silly, So Fun!!   October 5, 2008
We have been picking up Eric Carle books to help with our four year old daughter's PDD and speech challenges. The repetitive sentence structure is really a delight for her as she gets to read the parts that are the same from page to page, yet each page features a different animal which keeps this book from feeling monotonous. The story is sweet in the end and funny throughout as the grouchy lady bug picks fights and backs out of each one. The tiered pages through the main part of the book are fun, displaying both a clock to represent the time and text that goes from small to large, emphasizing the growing size of the creatures the ladybug decides to pick fights with. If you're looking for cute story with reinforcers to proper sentence structure, introduction to time, and timeless art, this is a great book to get!

4 out of 5 stars Good book for the age group.   August 31, 2008
I really liked this children's book. The illustrations were very peculiar and different, as was the organization of the book. The pages going from smaller to bigger in the middle and the words on the pages also changing in size, getting progressively larger is definitely a different touch. I especially liked how the shape of the whale's tail was a page in itself towards the end. There was also a clock on each page reinforcing the time mentioned and the concept of it. All around this is a great book. It brings unusal animals, not thought about everyday to mind, which could potentially lead to questions and curiosity about them. I really think this a great book for the age group it is meant for (ages 3-7).

1 out of 5 stars Two boys' review: We like The Very Hungry Caterpillar better   August 1, 2008
This book is eligible for Amazon's 4-for-3 promotion, so you are not risking a lot of money should you buy this book.

It isn't one of our favorites from Eric Carle. The story is supposed to address anger issues -- and it does -- by hitting you over the head as the ladybug flies from page to page trying to pick a fight with larger and larger animals.

The problem isn't the message it is the entertainment value. This book simply didn't engage our sons' interest. I suppose it is difficult enough to relate to a bug, much less an angry bug.

For our bedtime reading collection, we prefer these Carle books instead:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Mixed-Up Chameleon

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

5 out of 5 stars There is a great lesson here!   July 27, 2008

I love Eric Carle! His illustrations are wonderful and there is always a math or science lesson included in the text. This one helps children learn to tell time and explains how ladybugs are helpful to plants. I was shocked when I read some of the reviews that criticized this book. I am the mother of five and I know that you can't protect them forever. Don't get upset about the behavior of the ladybug; use it as an example. Your children WILL encounter bullies like this ladybug. Explain this to them along with how you think they should handle the situation. It is also an example of how you do NOT want your own children to behave, even if they might be feeling grouchy. We all have bad days, but being mean to others is not the way to handle those days. In the end, the ladybug also realizes this. In my opinion, allowing them to enjoy this book will help your children, not hurt them.
