Very sturdy and great for motor skills May 7, 2010 S. Brown (Shanghai) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We received a set of these cards when my daughter was around 10 months old. She is now 19 months old and this continues to be one of her favorite toys.
Pros:
- easy-to-open box with velcro closure that has not worn out
- very sturdy cards that survived my daughter's teething stage
- the top of the box does not detach - instead it flips up and over, so it's easy for my daughter to open the box herself, then pull cards out and put cards back in. This was her favorite aspect of these cards and she can play with them for a long time, either by herself or with an adult
Cons:
- My daughter is not that all that interested in the touch and feel or learning aspects of the cards. They may be more appropriate for older children who can understand the concept of shapes and colors.
Overall these DK card packs are great, and I would buy them for a baby shower or for a first birthday gift. For a young child or toddler I would recommend the First Words pack or maybe the animals pack, as younger children can understand those first. The First Words pack might also be a good one to practice sign language, if you are teaching your child baby sign language as well.
wonderful learning tool April 13, 2010 RI (NJ) my son has learned so many new words from this cards - we have 3 other sets as well. i highly recommend.
Good flash cards January 9, 2010 L. Ladebauche They're durable and fun to look at, a little more than basic flash cards though...when I'm teaching, I kinda prefer the basics first so there is no confusion or feeling of being overwhelmed. For example, the "square" is a mulitcolored "gift/present"...yes, this helps kids identify shapes in their world, however, when they are first learning a shape it is easier for them to see a simple shape, not a multicolored object that is that shape, and then they will discover square objects on their own. Just a minor weakness, in my opinion. To teach shapes, I did my own cutouts...white shapes on black posterboard...there was no confusion and they were learned quite quickly. For colors, make identically shaped cutouts of each color on posterboard. Overall these were good for my toddler after she learned the basics and she wanted to have her hands on everything...they kept her busy looking through them and playing "find the ______."
Not great December 28, 2009 K. Henson (Commerce, MI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The "touch and feel" aspect of these cards are the real drawback here. That was why I bought these flashcards instead of plain ones, but most of the textures are the same, and very smooth, so there is not much to actually feel. Also, there is a picture of a dress, purse, and girls' ballet slippers, so they are a bit gender biased as well.
Great flash cards for babies November 17, 2009 Girl n Basketball (Los Angeles, CA) First I purchased the baby Einstein flash cards but I notice that the cards were too busy and my son couldn't focus on one object. He ended up just chewing on the cards. Then I purchased DK Publishing brand which are more simple. Now my baby focuses on the object and points to it with his finger, then chews on the cards.
Over all this is a great product for kids ages 5 months and up.
