Amazon.com Review There's something very strange about the rats living under the rosebush at the Fitzgibbon farm. But Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with a sick child, is in dire straits and must turn to these exceptional creatures for assistance. Soon she finds herself flying on the back of a crow, slipping sleeping powder into a ferocious cat's dinner dish, and helping 108 brilliant, laboratory-enhanced rats escape to a utopian civilization of their own design, no longer to live "on the edge of somebody else's, like fleas on a dog's back." This unusual novel, winner of the Newbery Medal (among a host of other accolades) snags the reader on page one and reels in steadily all the way through to the exhilarating conclusion. Robert O'Brien has created a small but complete world in which a mother's concern for her son overpowers her fear of all her natural enemies and allows her to make some extraordinary discoveries along the way. O'Brien's incredible tale, along with Zena Bernstein's appealing ink drawings, ensures that readers will never again look at alley rats and field mice in the same way. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Mrs. Frisby and friends December 1, 2008 Mrs. Frisby and the rats of NIMH written by Robert O'Brien (Aladdin, 1986) is an exceptional book that teaches all children that by working together, miracles can happen. Mrs. Frisby, a mouse widow with a sick child must soon make the move to her summer home, or risk being plowed by Mr. Fitzgibbon as he prepares for spring planting. Unable to move on her own due to Timothy's bout with pneumonia, Mrs. Frisby must find help. This quest for help finds Mrs. Frisby flying on the back of a crow, keeping company with an old owl, discovering the world of the mysterious neighboring rats, and being captured by Mr. Fitzgibbon's son. As if all of these adventures weren't enough, Mrs. Frisby also learns of a secret that her late husband kept from her, detailing his remarkable journey to the Fitzgibbon farm. This significant story will teach any child that help can be found from the most unbelievable of sources, and to never give up hope. Mrs. Frisby's story will stick in the minds of its readers long after the final page has been read.

An adventure for young and old. September 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book for my grandaughter, who's 13, at the suggestion of my daughter, who's 36 and still reads her copy of this book occassionally to enjoy the story again. I'm 61 and wanted to know what is it about this book that is so entertaining, so I read it too. My only comment, at any age, this story is delightful and a "must read" for all ages.
A great book for young readers August 13, 2008 NIMH is a great book for young readers (11-13). The book is a great story about survival, sacrifice, and challenged me to root for a mob of rats.
Mrs. Frisby is a very sympathetic character that shows that regardless of species in literature, moms are moms, and they'll do whatever it takes to take care of their family.
I think that young readers will enjoy this book, but older teenage readers could balk at the subject rather wanting to read something more intuned to their interests.
Insipid cover currently shipping July 16, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The cover art shipping now (July '08) is the beige one in the alternate images -- a useless and dull cover compared with the exciting view of Mrs. Frisby and the crow Jeremy against blue on display at this page. I wish I'd bought this in a bookstore instead, and might have had another choice of cover art. At least the interior art is the excellent classic version.
