A wonderful addition to any Potter fan's library! July 5, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found a copy of this edition at a library booksale and bought it as I have always loved Beatrix Potter's whimsical tales. This edition has 13 stories in it comprising: The Tale of Peter Rabbit The Tailor of Gloucester The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin The Tale of Benjamin Bunny The Tale of Two Bad Mice The Tale of Mrs Tiggy-winkle The Pie and the Patty-Pan The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit The Story of Miss Moppet The Tale of Tom Kitten The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck, and The Roly-Poly Pudding
The illustrations are in both color and black and white, and my only grouse is that they are a bit small, there are on average, 3 illustrations per page, and together with the text, that seems a bit crowded. I think this edition is more suitable for older children and adults than younger children. I know that my two-year-old prefers the individual books [one story per book] where its not only more compact for little hands to handle but also has bigger illustrations.
On the whole though, I feel this is a great addition to one's library, and makes for easy carrying around...I love to read these stories on rainy days, as it warms my heart:)
Issues with the Edition, Not the Stories December 13, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
ISBN: 0517449013 - The stories are wonderful, but the pictures in this edition are too small. I also prefer 1 picture per page, so my son can know which picture I am reading about without having to point. My 3 year old likes the small Beatrix Potter books from our local library that have 1 story per book so he can quickly look at the front cover to decide which story to read, and are small enough to fit perfectly in his hand.
Note: As other reviewers have mentioned, the language is sometimes outdated, but don't let that discourage you from reading these wonderful stories to your children. Just take your time with the books and explain where needed. For example, in the story of Peter Rabbit, there is a part that reads: "Peter gave himself up for lost". After reading this part to my son for the first time I would just casually say "Oh no! Peter didn't think he could get away." Or if your child is coming across a new word for the first time, say the word, then give a synonym that your child does know to go with it. I sometimes have my son act out a part in the story to help with comprehension as well. ("Can you 'tremble with fright' like Peter?") By the time you read the story 2-3 times while giving short explanations as you go, your child will fully understand the story and as an added bonus will have a better vocabulary.
Aaah! May 29, 2003 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
These stories are NOT what I would have chosen for my 2 year old! They all have something unnecessarily frightening or unpleasant. I skip those parts the best I can when I read it. Unfortunately my child really likes this book.
Contains 13 Stories With Original Illustrations December 2, 2000 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Contains all the popular Beatrix Potter Stories, plus a few less known. Contents are The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucester, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Bejamin Bunny, The Tale of Two Bad Mice, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-winkle, The Pie and the Patty-Pan, The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, The Story of Miss Moppet, The Tale of Tom Kitten, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck and The Roly-Poly PuddingThe book has two or three original illustrations on each page, so Peter Rabbit only takes 9 pages. A pretty good collection for the price -- though some of these stories are pretty forgettable.
