5 out of 5 stars Great Fun, Great Buy   July 3, 2008
My wife and I were looking for light, easily transportable boats to replace our heavy, polypro tandem. We got this boat for me, which is a little bigger, and the very similar smaller boat for her. Once you get the hang of it, the setup is easy, though breaking it down to fit in the bag is a little more challenging. It performs very well and is a lot of fun. Though it rides higher than our tandem, and therefore catches more wind, it also takes on less water in chop (without a spray skirt). It's maneuverable and tracks fairly well. It's also very comfortable, as I had no pain in my low back like I get in my tandem and similar boats I've tried. The construction seems durable, though I've only used it for a week at Long Pond on Cape Cod. For the price (under $500) it's unbeatable.

5 out of 5 stars Good value   June 11, 2008
My particular order with Amazon was unexpectedly fast in delivery (just a couple of days). The construction and design of this kayak are excellent; I especially like the main chambers, which are not susceptible to seam tears, but instead are enclosed in a very durable zippered nylon "sheath", making them readily accessible for repair. Setup is pretty quick; about 10 minutes with a dual action pump. Plenty of room on this "Expedition" model; very nice for lake excursions. I haven't tried it in white water, but appears sturdy enough to do the job. At $466 (inclucing postage), a great value in my opinion, for years of fun. Nice tracking in the water; comfortable seat. The zippered deck enables freedom of movement and easy storage. Beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Convenient Recreational Kayak   April 24, 2008

For those that don't have the space or the budget for a nice fiberglass touring kayak, the Advanced Elements Expedition is the next best thing. I purchased this last year late in the season and have just started taking it out again now that the weather has warmed up, and I continue to think it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's easy to store, easy to set up, handles well, performs well, and is very comfortable. All around a great recreational kayak.

Setup is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. While the Expedition model has quite a few different chambers to fill (9 total) and they all should be done in the proper order, it is not that complicated or time consuming a job. There are really just two main chambers which get filled up first, and then the floor and the deck lift chambers, and finally the combing for the skirt. The two first chambers take the longest - maybe 10 minutes total using the bi-directional hand pump. The rest can be filled in another 5 minutes, making the total time for inflation about 15 minutes. Filling can be somewhat tiring though, so those who are looking to spend more energy on the water than getting ready for the water might want to consider the 12v electric inflater. I have not used it but am considering it.

Construction of the AF Expedition is excellent. All materials are sturdy, and the coating on the bottom (the gray part) seems to be tough enough for years of use. The top part of the construction (the yellow or red part) is a thick nylon that is not waterproof but which provides some protection from the elements. I would recommend using a waterproofing spray on the top part to ensure that there is minimal water absorption, since this makes drying it out before storage a lot easier.

Once inflated the AF Expedition is very sturdy and firm. It does not flex at all, and feels much like a hardshell kayak. In the water it is very stable, a product no doubt of its relatively wide stance (32 inches). The byproduct of that wide stance is that in the water it is a bit slower than a top-notch hardshell kayak (that generally run about 26 inches wide). It tracks well and is actually pretty fast -- I haven't had any trouble keeping up with other recreational kayaks. Because the shape is rigid (reinforced with the aluminum bits in the front and back) it cuts through the water easily.

Paddling is comfortable so long as you use the right length of paddle; I use a 220cm and it seems to be the perfect size. I tried using a shorter paddle at one point and fount that it was not as comfortable and often found myself brushing the sides of the kayak with my knuckles. But with a longer paddle that's not a problem and paddling is a breeze. The Expedition model also includes an adjustable foot brace, which helps to keep you in the optimal position and not scoot around in the kayak too much.

The interior of the kayak is largely taken up by the inflatable chambers, but in the Expedition model there is definitely enough space for a day touring trip, with probably a few cubic feet behind the seat and another bit of room beyond the feet in the cockpit. Anyone planning on overnighting will probably have a bit of a hard time packing all their gear inside unless they pack very light, but storage area is easily augmented with a deck back fore or aft.

Deflating and storing is very easy to - the whole thing breaks down in about 10 minutes and is back in the case and ready for transport. The Expedition model stores in a bag about the size of a large suitcase, and weighs a little over 40 lbs. It's not light by any means, but a strong person can easily carry it over short distances alone. The fact that it stores so easily is obviously the best "feature" of this inflatable kayak - it can be easily transported in the trunk of a car or even on a plane, and can be stored in a closet of an apartment. Being able to transport it for weekend trips without worrying about lashing it to the top of the car or having to go get it out of a slip somewhere just makes kayaking that much easier to do on a whim.

As for whether or not to buy this one or the smaller AdvancedFrame 10' model, I own both so I have some insight. I bought the smaller one for my wife after I had tested the Expedition model, and she has taken it out for a spin. The smaller one is even easier to inflate (since it has fewer chambers) and is lighter and smaller to store. But the trade-off is a smaller cockpit with less storage space. For me, at 6' 175lbs, the Expedition model seems just right or a little large. For my wife, the smaller one is a perfect fit. I think a person of my size might feel somewhat cramped in the 10' model, as she described it as comfortably snug. So if you're under 5'10" the smaller 10' model might be just fine, but larger folks should consider the Expedition.

Overall this kayak is a great purchase for someone looking for a first kayak to take on casual trips and weekend excursions, or for a second kayak for those who might want to travel where they can't take their hardshell. Performance is on par with other hardshell recreational kayaks, but without the hassle of storage or transport. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Another high quality kayak from Advanced Elements...   October 25, 2007

This is my third AE kayak (have the AdvancedFrame 10.5 solo & StraitEdge2 tandem) and after a 1 hour paddle, will probably be my favorite. The workmanship and high quality materials are top notch. I'm a decent sized guy at 6-2/215 and it fits very well. This kayak will work great for someone up to 6-6 or so due to it's large capacity and plenty of legroom. Tracking: very good.Stability: excellent. Speed: very good. Has a huge weight capacity of 450lbs so you can load it up with camping gear. Advanced Elements has some of the best kayaks in the market...regardless of price, and excellent customer service who will answer your questions immediately.
