The U-shaped frame remains firmly installed while the center walk-through door opens in either direction. The basic Center Gateway fits openings of 29.25" to 37.5" wide. Unlike most of the metal safety gates on the market, the Center Gateway does not permanently attach to walls or banisters with hinges and screws. Instead, this 29.5-inch-high steel barrier uses a pressure-mounted system to hold it in place across doorways and halls in your house. Although it may lack the complete strength of a permanently mounted gate and probably shouldn't be used in front of stairways, the Center Gateway is far more versatile: after installation you can easily detach and move it throughout your home to block off-limit rooms and spaces as needed. The Center Gateway also eliminates the need for drilling holes into the wood and metalwork around your home. The gateway is designed to block spaces from 29.25 to 37.5 inches wide, and you can purchase optional extension kits (sold separately) to extend the gate's length to almost 49 inches. A very good and very effective gate August 7, 2010

This gate is much better than most on the market. The design allows it to function well as a gate, yet allowing foot traffic through by the inclusion of a lockable door in the unit. The gate is made of metal, but I deducted 1 star due to the locking mechanism being made of plastic. Only time will tell how much real-world use it will stand up to. Another thing about this gate that I like is the flexibility offered by the availability of extensions -- it is possible to mount this gate pretty much anywhere needed. Overall, I am happy with this purchase.

My wife bought another gate at a kid's store that we had to return because we couldn't mount it at the top of our stairs because of the set-up. We have a modern style, thin rail at the top which is not compatible with most gates.
This gate worked perfectly with the use of the Kidco Y Spindle. We also had to use a Kidco 5.5" extension kit. I have to say that this gate has exceeded our expectations. The assembly was very easy, took me about 10 minutes.
The use is simple yet effective. It is very easy, for an adult, to open, yet keeps our 15 month old safe on the other side. It also has a nice feature that doesn't allow the door to open when it is closed but not locked. This is a good feature in case you accidently do not lock it properly.
We've had this product for about 1 month now and are extremely satisfied. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a sturdy safety gate that is easy to open and close.

I purchased this gate for our church nursery. So far it is working out very well. We have had other plastic gates that worked fine but were broken off the wall by kids hanging and swinging on it. The KidCo metal gate opens from the center so we are hoping it will hold up much longer and not be an enticement to kids swinging on the open gate door. The only negative for me is the tripping hazard of the bar across the bottom of the gate or threshold. I have seen other gates that have a threshold more like one in a home. This bar on the threshold takes some getting used to and could be a hazard for someone who is not aware of it's height. The childproof locking feature is a plus! If it lasts longer than our last two gates I would give it a 5 star rating but since we only have it a month, I gave it 4 stars.
