Do not waste your money - buy The First Years Simple and Secure Stair gate December 2, 2008 About a year ago we researched and purchased two gates, we have had no problems with the First Years gate and find it's ease of use and even installation far superior then the Safety 1st gate we also purchased. My 10 year old can easily open the First Years gate with one hand, but has to climb over the Safety 1st gate everytime, which of course is dangerous at the top of the stairs. The Safety 1st gate requires two hands to open from both my husband and I and most visiting adults can't open it at all, even after we share the "trick" with them. I would definately not purchase this gate again.
Broken hinge December 1, 2008 As you can see in the photos, the hinge is plastic. It tends to break very easily when kids pull or climb on the gate, which they will inevitably do. The gate itself is such a rigid metal item, I wonder why they would make the hinge such a dinky little piece of plastic?
We love this gate! November 18, 2008 We have this gate installed at the top of our stairs and love it. We've been using it for 4 months now. It is easy to open, but would be very difficult for a child to open. It took my husband less than 30 minutes to install. It is made of metal and seems very sturdy. I especially like that I can "slam" it shut if I want, I don't have to stand there and close it. The only complaint I have, but it wasn't worth returning it for a new one, is that the light on ours doesn't work. We found that we haven't missed it though. We bought this gate for the safety and the look of it.
This gate is wonderful November 17, 2008 This gate is perfect for our family. We have a split entry house, and we use it at the top of the stairs. The gate is very easy for adults to use, but our toddler isn't strong enough to use the gate alone, in our case this is a very good thing. The gate latches very easily and sucurely. The motion sencing night light is just an added bonus. We have no complaints at all, and would reccomend this gate to anyone. Note: the gate does require being screwed into the wall, and does leave holes.
Great gate October 20, 2008 I love this gate. I read the directions, installed it alone, used extra long drywall screws per another reviewer's suggestion, and over a year later, we still have a sturdy gate to keep our active toddler downstairs.
See the picture I posted of my installed gate. It's the only gate I could find which would work with our tall baseboards without adding extra boards or hardware. I chose to use a 2x4 cable-tied to the banister to avoid drilling holes in it. Because of this, the gate wobbles a little, but has never come open accidentally or failed to close properly.
Our guests, usually older ones, tend to have trouble with the handle, but trust me, you'll get the hang of it, as you would have to do with any new gate. They can't make it too easy to open or the kids could do it and defeat the purpose.
