Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With 49 MHz technology, lightweight portability and sound lights that let parents see baby's activity level, The First Years 49 MHz Two Receiver Monitor provides peace of mind when parents are away from baby. For added convenience, we've included two receivers so parents can keep each receiver in a different room, or so two listeners can have a monitor handy at all times. Plus, low-battery indicator provides extra reassurance that when the monitor is quiet, it just means that baby is sleeping - not that the monitor isn't working

3 out of 5 stars Can hear the neighbors kid   July 17, 2008
We got this 2 1/2 years ago for my first daughter. It's worked fine until we tried to use it in a different room for our newest addition. It will ONLY pick up the signal from the neighbors' monitor (we live in an attached twin/duplex) on one channel and nothing but static on the 2nd channel. I even tried putting the monitor/base unit next to my daughter and the receiver a foot away and still heard the neighbor's daughter crying!

4 out of 5 stars Good for what I need   June 21, 2008
I live in a small apartment so I didn't require a really good long distance monitor. I like the fact that this works from the mains and I am not using up loads of batteries. I have had no issues with switching on the parts etc. There is a little amount of static that comes over on the monitors but I have still been able to hear my baby over the monitor. I have found it great at picking up the stirring noises my child makes so I am able to get to my Little One before the real crying begins. I have relied on it at night with my little one sleeping in another room and I have not been let down. I only gave four stars due to the white noise that can be heard over the speaker and also I would want a better one if I was in a bigger house, but for my apartment it is great!!

4 out of 5 stars Good product for the price - 6 years and going strong!   June 26, 2007
I got this monitor when my first child was born, 6 years ago. It is still going strong! I think it is great for the price.

PROS - the paging button, having two receivers (for when I inevitably loose one), being able to use batteries OR plug in for all units, lights display, two channels to avoid hearing the neighbors, clear reception in a small house or apt. Durable - my kids (and I) were constantly dropping the receivers and they work just fine.

CONS - Range is fairly short. I could go to the next apt over without any problem, or get the mail but that was the limit. (I now live in the boonies and am looking for a REALLY long range monitor.) Static gets bad once out of the range (descibed above.)

It met my needs great - I love all the First Years products I've owned. They seem to design products with lots of insight into the needs of real families.

As others have mentioned there is excessive static. One of my units crapped out after 13mo. This is fairly common of stuff made in China. It's too bad that most Americans are too cheap to support American made products. They sure were made FAR better than the consumer products made today. Those days are gone though.

2 out of 5 stars Works well - NOT portable   March 20, 2007
PROs:
- good price for a two receiver monitor
- good reception with little static in a 3300 sq. ft. house

CONs:
- child unit doesn't use batteries so this is NOT portable

A decent monitor with little static interferrence but we are out and about often and need the portability of battery operation for both child and parent units. The child unti only uses the AC adapter. Because of this, we are returning this and looking for a fully portable set.
