My husband and i bought this a week ago for our 2 month old son.. December 3, 2008 My husband originally didn't think it would be useful, and didn't want to buy it.. (at babies-r-us $49.99) but i thought it would be useful since i'm breastfeeding and it's a WHOLE lot easier to feed him WITHOUT having to get out of bed half asleep to go get him and bring him to our bed anyway for his feeding.. AND i hear when he cries better since he's close.
I wish they had had the one with the pad at the bottom, the "The First Years Close & Secure Sleeper" but i'm sure that i can buy a cheap sleep positioner & sew/velcro it on at the bottom to prevent him from slipping out of the nest (he's small and i can't move the velcro sleep positioner in anymore & if he lifts his arms up he slides down.)
My son can easily press/turn on the light (which takes 2 AAA batteries) and other than the "slipping down" issues, which i've temporarily solved by bundling him up in a blanket so it's harder for him to slip.. it's an ok sleeper nest. I gave 4 out of 5 stars only because the makers of the product could have forseen babies being able to slip down/out of this and should have put something at the bottom to prevent that..
Very comfy and secure November 3, 2008 We never intended on co-sleeping, but neither of our babies would sleep in their own rooms, AND they had reflux. So as with most things with children, the best laid plans need to be changed sometimes! ;) It was easy to elevate the snuggle nest (I think the newer models already come reclined). As some have discussed, we have never had an issue with it going from one side to another in the bed, although we have a very firm mattress.
The best thing about this is that that little enclosed space makes them feel so much more secure - so they are not swimming in a big crib! It really made the transition to their own beds easier.
Also, if you end up having a baby who was in the breech position, did you know that for the first few weeks their legs can be in a drawn up position? When we brought our son home from the hospital, we put him in one side of the crib and he rolled right to the end of it, just because of momentum! This snuggle nest was a lifesaver for that, so we were glad to have it, co-sleeping or not.
We also LOVED the cute little night light that came with it - it was the perfect brightness and not too loud to turn on. We used it with our first baby, but it was broken by the time our 2nd one came around. I didn't downgrade the rating, because we are pretty hard on night lights in our house, so this isn't really unusual!
Disappointing April 24, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I originally purchased a Secure Sleeper only to find out that it only has 24 inches of space within and my daughter at seven weeks is 23 inches long with basically no room to grow. I returned it and ordered one of these as it is open ended and seemed to have the needed room for growth. Unlike the secure sleeper it doesn't have the stabilizer that goes over the top of the mattress. Unfortunately, that allows it to tilt to whichever side of the bed the heaver person sleeps on. I would wake up and either she was dumped out completely or already half out of the thing. Also, I didn't notice it immediately but it had sort of a toxic odor to it once you got close really close to it. I wasn't happy at the thought that my daughter was breathing that smell in at all. After a few days it aired out but by then I was just disappointed with this product.
Poor mattress, high price April 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is basically a plastic box covered in quilted fabric. This was very helpful and convenient when my baby was newborn because we could just place it in the middle of our king-sized bed without having to worry that we would roll over on him. The biggest disappointment was the mattress. It is very thin and coated in plastic with a low-thread count sheet - in other words, it's hard and doesn't breathe and can irritate baby's skin. The first few nights I used it my baby woke up in a pool of sweat. I made my own mattress with expensive memory foam and made my own sheets with 100% cotten hotel-grade sheets. Then it was the best bed in the world. But at such a high cost, shouldn't the bed have a mattress of higher quality material to begin with?
sent it back March 28, 2008 I recently sent this back -- it's not really inclined and doesn't fit the bed (three in a queen does not work). I didn't love it and neither did my son.
